Best Ingredients for Each Season
Discover which fragrance ingredients work best for spring, summer, autumn, and winter — and how to adjust your compositions accordingly.
Seasonal Perfumery
The best fragrance for January is rarely the best for July. Temperature, humidity, and mood all influence how a scent performs and is perceived.
Spring — Fresh & Floral
Spring calls for lightness and optimism:
- Top: Bergamot, Neroli, Green Tea
- Heart: Lily of the Valley, Peony, Freesia
- Base: Light Musk, Ambrette, Sheer Woods
- Concentration: Keep it light (15–20% total)
Summer — Citrus & Aquatic
Heat amplifies fragrance, so less is more:
- Top: Lemon, Grapefruit, Mandarin, Mint
- Heart: Jasmine, Sea Salt, Coconut
- Base: Vetiver, Light Cedar, Skin Musk
- Tip: Avoid heavy orientals — they can become cloying in heat
Autumn — Spicy & Woody
Cooler air lets richer notes shine:
- Top: Pink Pepper, Cardamom, Apple
- Heart: Saffron, Cinnamon, Rose Absolute
- Base: Sandalwood, Patchouli, Tonka Bean
- Concentration: Medium (25–35% total)
Winter — Oriental & Smoky
Cold weather demands warmth and depth:
- Top: Black Pepper, Clove, Aldehydes
- Heart: Oud, Incense, Iris
- Base: Amber, Benzoin, Vanilla, Leather
- Concentration: Rich (35–50% total)
Adjusting Existing Compositions
Want to wear your favourite composition in a different season?
- Summer-ify: Reduce base note concentration, add a citrus top note
- Winter-ify: Increase base notes, add a warm spice to the heart
